The first album was Portraits by Ellington (), and seven years later the Ellington centennial was honored with the album Live in Swing City: Swingin' with the Duke (). Under the leadership of Marsalis, the band performs at its home in Lincoln Center, tours throughout the U.S. and abroad, visits schools, appears on television, and performs with symphony orchestras.

The piece orchestra maintains a heavy touring schedule, devoting around six months annually to appearances around the U.S. and at prominent international venues.

Why You Need This Album: This live album finds the Ellington Orchestra triumphantly swinging their way back into the national consciousness. Their Newport Jazz Festival performance was a rapturous experience, and Paul Gonsalves’s legendary chorus solo on "Diminuendo and Crescendo in Blue" left the audience screaming for more.
Overall this album is not the best of LCJO recordings, but it still pretty and entertaining to listen to. For the best introduction to their music, and the music of Ellington, may I direct you to 'The Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra: Live in Swing City', which features the music of Ellington in a live setting with all the familiar LCJO members/5(6).
