State of Confusion and Definite Maybe are more in the mould of the original Kinks' tracks although with a harder almost punk sound. They are the songs of a middle aged man trying to cope with the beaucracy of a computer age, in the same way that tin-pan alley frustrated a younger Ray Davies on Lola Versus the Powerman and the Money Go Round/5(49).

State of Confusion Lyrics: Woke up in a panic / Like somebody fired a gun / I wish I could be dreaming / But the nightmare's just begun / There's flooding in the basement / There's water all.
It's a state (state) Of confusion (whooooh). We're in a state (state) Of confusion (whooooh). I don't know whether I'm coming or I'm going. Should feel happy, should feel glad. I'm alive and it can't be bad, But back on planet Earth they shatter the illusion, The world's going 'round in a state of confusion. Standing on an island In the middle.
The Kinks continued to turn out quality LPs during a "silver age" while they were contracted to Arista Records from `State of Confusion' brought the band the added pleasure of a Top Ten single in "Come Dancing" which must have seemed like a shock to UK critics who had given up the Kinks for dead long before this career Renaissance/5(20).
The Kinks' State of Confusion had its share of glossy hard rock in the vein of "Low Budget" and "Destroyer," but the record came to life on the quieter numbers, whether it's the elegiac "Don't Forget to Dance," the wistful pop of "Long Distance," or the buoyant nostalgia of "Come Dancing," which became the group's biggest hit since "Tired of Waiting for You."6/
